Web update! 2/5/2012

****************

Live Wire Press is resuming publication of In Good Company in a revised format.

This is a contest.

All entries must be original work and not yet published - including self-published.

There will be first, second, and third monetary prizes and the first prize story will be published online in the Live Wire Press Blog with a podcast interview of the winner.

The monetary awards will depend on the number of submissions received.

These will be announced on or after March 31, 2012

The cover is ready. The featured author will be the first prize winner.

Two hundred fifty pages are waiting to be filled, so only a certain number of tales can be told in this volume.

Participating authors will be notified after March 31,2011.

The entry period is from December 1, 2011 to March 31, 2012.

Suitable entries will range from 2,000 to 5,000 words.

Entry fee is $15 per story. No refunds.

A panel of judges, when selected, will be posted.

Qualified volunteers for this job are welcome.

Check Submission Guidelines for more information.

GENERAL SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS & GUIDELINES

1. A submission fee of $15 is required for each entry; multiple entries are permitted as long as the accompanying fee for each submission is included.  Submissions should be between two and five thousand words. Also send a brief (300-500 words) biography. Longer bios will be edited.

2. Stories should be submitted on disk in Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, or rich text format (.rtf), along with a hard copy. Do not email entries. The submission will be accepted upon reception of hard copy and fee only.

3. Format is as follows: 12-point font, preferably Times New Roman; double-spaced; 1-inch margins all around; and numbered pages. The copy on disk should match the hard copy.

4. Authors should include their name, address, telephone number, and e-mail address. Cover letters are not necessary. Please include a letter-sized SASE which will only be used for non-selected material if enough postage is included for return. I will inform all authors of status by email. Submissions which are not accepted will be otherwise recycled.

5. Please do not send metered postage strips. They are good only for the day of purchase and/or the PO where purchased.

6. Contracts will be issued to writers whose stories are selected for inclusion in the volume. Contracts will be sent via email, but a signed hard copy must be returned. Publisher copyrights published works and retains all rights for one year after publication; then all rights revert to author.

7. Payment: Prize winners will receive five free copies of the publication. Authors receive one copy of the publication and share in an aggregate royalty of 10 percent of retail book sales which is computed one year after publication. Authors receive a pre-publication discount of 25% and a post-publication discount of 12.5% on this or any other volume still in print. Since royalties have been historically small (less than one dollar), Live Wire Press has been donating the aggregate royalty to the Library of Virginia. Suggestions for other literacy movements or interests are welcomed. A personal receipt for royalty earned is available upon request.

8. In Good Company is intended to be a showcase of literary talent with a broad appeal. To this end, please understand that works which are limited by their content or genre—i.e., mysteries, horror, science fiction, or bodice-rippers—must transcend their genres and be excellent short stories to be considered. Similarly, stories which use profanity, violence, sex, or counter-cultural themes will be equally considered.

9. It would be very much appreciated if each author purchase at least three books—which helps defray printing costs. Please do not let this request prevent you from entering.

10. Mail your submission packet with fees—check or money order to

   Risk

And then the day came,
when the risk
to remain tight
in a bud
was more painful
than the risk
it took
to Blossom

1. Both published and unpublished poets who live in or have a substantial connection with Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, or North and South Carolina, are invited to submit poetry for consideration.

2.  Poets may submit up to five entries with the accompanying fee for each submission.  All submissions must be original, unpublished and not under consideration by another publisher. All submissions should convey some aspect of the theme.

3. Although poems of 32 lines or less are preferred, longer poems receive full consideration. There are no restrictions on genre or form. All poems must be titled.

4. To confirm receipt of submissions, please include a self-addressed, stamped postcard listing the titles of the submissions and the line: "Poems and fees received."

5. To ensure efficiency, please send submissions and bios both electronically (email) and in a hard copy. The hard copy will tell me how you want the poem to appear in the book. Please do not “format” the electronic copy even if it looks perfectly awful. (explanation below)

a)  by email - either in the email body or as a Word (2003) or WordPerfect document attachment. Please put Poetry Submission in the subject line of the email. Do not format this entry, i.e. keep all lines flush left, no centering, no tabs, no indents, etc. Send to padler@cstone.net

AND

b)  Submit one copy of each poem on a separate sheet of paper, in the form you would like it to appearwith your name, complete address with ZIP code, phone number and email address in the upper right-hand corner. A check for the registration fee(s) should accompany the hard copy submissions. Email submissions will be considered only when the hard copy and fee is in hand. Authors will be notified when hard copies have been received.

Please include a brief (100-150 word) biography.
Longer biographies will be edited.

 6. Contracts will be issued to poets whose poems are selected for inclusion in the volume. Publisher copyrights published works and retains all rights for one year after publication; then all rights revert to the poet.

7. Payment: Poets receive one copy of the publication and share in an aggregate royalty of 10 percent of retail book sales, computed one year after publication. Since royalties have been historically miniscule, Live Wire Press gives a donation of the aggregate royalty to the Library of Virginia. A personal receipt for royalty earned is available upon request.

Poets receive a pre-publication discount of 25% and a reduced post-publication discount of 12.5% towards purchase of additional copies.

8. Submissions will not be returned; poets should keep copies of all poetry submitted.
