2. A submission fee of $15 is required for each entry; multiple entries are permitted as long as the accompanying fee for each submission is included.  Submissions should be between two and five thousand words. Also send a brief (300-500 words) biography. Longer bios will be edited.

5. Authors should include their name, address, telephone number, and e-mail address. Cover letters are not necessary. Please include a letter-sized SASE.  Submissions which are not accepted will be recycled unless enough postage is included for return. Please do not send metered postage strips. 6. Contracts will be issued to writers whose stories are selected for inclusion in the volume. Publisher copyrights published works and retains all rights for one year after publication; then all rights revert to author.

7. Payment: Authors receive one copy of the publication and share in an aggregate royalty of 10 percent of retail book sales which is computed one year after publication. Authors receive a pre-publication discount of 25% and a post-publication discount of 12.5% on this or any other volume still in print. Since royalties have been historically small, Live Wire Press donates the aggregate royalty to the Library of Virginia. Suggestions for other literacy movements or interests are welcomed. A personal receipt for royalty earned is available upon request.

8. In Good Company is intended to be a showcase of literary talent with a broad appeal. To this end, please understand that works which are limited by their content or genre—i.e., mysteries, horror, science fiction, or bodice-rippers—must transcend their genres and be excellent short stories to be considered. Similarly, stories which use profanity, violence, sex, or counter-cultural themes will be equally considered.

9. It would be very much appreciated if each author purchase at least three books—which helps defray printing costs. Please do not let this request prevent you from entering.

10. Mail your submission packet with fees—check or money order to

The Burning of the Leaves

by Laurence Binyon

Now is the time for the burning of the leaves,
They go to the fire; the nostrils prick with smoke
Wandering slowly into the weeping mist.
Brittle and blotched, ragged and rotten sheaves!
A flame seizes the smouldering ruin, and bites
On stubborn stalks that crackle as they resist.
The last hollyhock’s fallen tower is dust:
All the spices of June are a bitter reek,
All the extravagant riches spent and mean.
All burns! the reddest rose is a ghost.
Spark whirl up, to expire in the mist: the wild
Fingers of fire are making corruption clean.
Now is the time for stripping the spirit bare,
Time for the burning of days ended and done,
Idle solace of things that have gone before,
Rootless hope and fruitless desire are there:
Let them go to the fire with never a look behind.
That world that was ours is a world that is ours no more.
They will come again, the leaf and the flower, to arise
From squalor of rottenness into the old splendour,
And magical scents to a wondering memory bring;
The same glory, to shine upon different eyes.
Earth cares for her own ruins, naught for ours.
Nothing is certain, only the certain spring.
